This picture was taken during the summer of 2004 on Kos. The escavation was on a hill far above the city and I was sooooo proud of myself for biking all the way up there in the morning sun. Believe me, it was well worth the effort. What I really love about the columns is the contrast or likeness with the pines in the background. I have been told that pine trees were often used to create columns - this is especially true on Crete, where very often only the stone basis of a column remains. But here, the column is made of stone.
According to the local legends, the air of the high hills and the pine trees had a healing effect, so for many centuries, this has been the site of temples and churches dedicated to healing. I am willing to believe in the healing effect - the pines gave the place a wonderful smell and it was the perfect place to find peace of mind. My friend CausticTherapy has a tendency towards ruins and holy buildings, so I dedicate this picture to him. |
